HÖJDEN
Höjden is an artist-driven workspace featuring a studio, art studios, a gallery and offices - a space for freelance cultural workers, artists, and our audience to come together.

Höjden is an inclusive and welcoming workspace for a diverse range of artists and cultural workers who contribute to Stockholm’s cultural life. Our goal is to contribute to a cultural scene that thrives with new initiatives and forms of expression, while advocating for collaboration and solidarity among artists and disciplines. We aim to strengthen the independence of the art field and create secure and sustainable conditions for cultural work by, for example, offering a continuous working environment, opportunities for presentation, an audience, and networks. The breadth of our activities makes the venue an open and unifying space and contributes to democratic processes in the cultural sector. Our public program has room for both completed works and work in progress that are presented to the professional cultural field and the citizens of Stockholm. At the same time, we strive to be a hub for culture and community in Östberga and collaborate with our neighbors in the area.

BACKGROUND
Since 2018, the Släktet Economic Association has been running Höjden in Östberga, an interdisciplinary and artist-driven platform for presentation, production, collaboration, and daily work for artists and cultural workers. Our open spaces featuring a stage, dance studio, gallery, music studio, artist studios, office spaces, library, kitchen, and bar, contribute to a creative hub for the field. Through public programming and structures for artistic production, Höjden aims to appeal to a broader audience and complement the cultural offerings available on artists’ terms.

Höjden is a platform that supports Stockholm’s independent artists, who often constitute the most precarious yet most vital segment of the cultural field. Currently, Höjden has approximately 100 members—individual artists and organizations—from various fields such as dance, music, performance, choreography, visual arts, performing arts, literature, film, and design, spanning different ages and stages of their careers, with an extensive regional, national, and international network.

In 2024, we changed our financial strategy; lowering the membership fee allowed us to increase our membership from around 20 to over 100. What makes Höjden unique is these 100 artists working in parallel and running the space together with the board and coordinator. This means the space is constantly taking shape and developing organically.

Today, the venue is more active than ever. Thanks to our members’ dedication, we have been able to host festivals, concerts, film screenings, and after-work events. In 2024, we saw a need for more opportunities to both create and present works and organized several festivals to give works a longer lifespan—an effort to secure space for art and artistic work. We are an important voice in the cultural policy landscape as we organize many freelance artists in Stockholm.
